LiftMaster Telephone Interface FAQ's

Updated on Friday, February 29, 2008

1 OTIU Telephone Compatibility
  • The OTIU is compatible with most ELECTRONIC telephones.  The internal Electronic Transformer of the OTIU is designed to be small (Unlike Ballast type larger transformers, the electronic design of this transformer allows it to be smaller, yet able to ring most phones).
  • Rev 4 and 5 of the OTIU has been refined to ring 95% of the telephones made. If you have a telephone that does not ring with the OTIU, please contact local LiftMaster distributor and order a 22 volt adapter (instead of the 18v adapter supplied). This will ring even the largest loads.
  • The OTIU has a REN# of 3 with an 18v transformer and Ren#4 to Ren#5 with a 22v transformer. Most electronic telephones have a REN# of 0.01 to 0.08. The OTIU can ring many of these phone simultaneously without problem.
  • The OTIU is compatible with any PBX system as well as other phones. For PBX systems, you can install the OTIU at the entry point to the home (Demark) before the outside line goes into the PBX box, or you can also install it at one of the ANALOG outputs of the PBX. DO NOT connect to any of the DIGITAL ports, as this can damage the system and the OTIU.

2 OTIU does not ring the telephone. Nothing happens AT CLOSE RANGE when CALL button on the GAP is pressed;
  • Did you properly TEACH the OTIU to the Gate Access Panel (GAPLM), Door Acccess Intercom (DAILM) or Front Door Intercom (FDI)? To test this, press the call button on the GAPML or any of the devices mentioned above. Does the ALERT LED blink on the OTIU? If it does not, you have not performed the TEACH step properly. Please note that if the OTIU has been programmed previously, you must ERASE the memory of the OTIU so that it can learn a new ID from your network (Enter **#8 on the phone keypad while plugged into the OTIU. You should hear a success tone. The memory of the OTIU is now erased). Please see the OTIU Installation Manual.
  • Is the POWER LED ON? If not, check power connections.

3 OTIU does not ring the telephone; AT FAR RANGE
  • If the connection is OK from close range, but the system has no link at range, the OTIU will not ring when the visitor is at the gate. For this instance, check the following:
  • Are you further than a few hundred feet? If so, you may have a "Blind Spot" where the radio signal is unable to reach. Reposition the OTIU, or lift it to a higher location. A Repeater can also solve this problem.
  • Make sure the Antenna is vertical and not closer than 6 inches from a wall or metallic object.
  • Is there a WIRELESS 900 MHZ VIDEO OR SPEAKER system in the home? Turn them off and check again. if the problem is resolved, you can change the system FREQUENCY on the GAP and hence, move the radio signal of the Oracle system away from the noise source. Please see "Changing Frequency Set Of GAPLM". Once you have successfully changed the frequency set, you must Re-Teach the OTIU to the GAPLM. To change the frequency set of the system please refer to the GAPLM installation manual.

4 OTIU does not ring the telephone, but the ALERT LED flashes rapidly when activated
  • Is the Wiring Correct? Please double check the connections. You MUST plug the jack marked LINE into the ANALOG Telephone Line. Do not connect to the DIGITAL output of a PBX system. This connection must only be installed to a standard analog connection. The telephone must be plugged into the Telephone Jack of the OTIU. If there are more than one, try one telephone and see if this fixes the problem.
  • You may need a higher voltage supply than the 18v adapter supplied with the OTIU. Please order a 22v supply from your Oracle distributor (please check the supply included with the OTIU and make sure it is not already a 22v supply). You may have too many telephone loads. Reduce the number of telephones.

5 I only hear a few words at a time, either on the GAPLM or on the telephone
  • Reduce the MICROPHONE SENSITIVITY on the GAPLM unit. See the GAPLM installation manual.
  • Some telephone systems, telephones or telephone lines may cause a VOX sensitivity fault with older versions of the OTIU.

6 STUCCO HOMES,    or locations with radio absorptive materials

POOR RANGE

  • The range stated for the system is for optimal conditions. You may not be able to place the system in such optimal locations. In cases such as a Stucco Home, which contains wire mesh and cement, the radio will have trouble penetrating into the residence.
  • In these cases you can use the Oracle Repeater. Place the repeater NEAR THE HOME. This is a case which the issue is not range, but attenuation of signal when it tries to penetrate the walls. Do not place the repeaters half-way to the GAP from the home. Place the Repeaters just outside the wall of the home.
  • If range is poor, it is possible that you have a blind spot or that there is a source of interference. See #3

7 When attempting to program the OTIU, I get Dial-Tone
  • The phone connection to the OTIU is incorrect. Make sure that the telephone is plugged into the PHONE JACK of the OTIU.
  • When starting to enter the ## commands, do not do it too slowly. The OTIU will only wait 2-3 seconds between your digit entries.

8 No Caller ID
  • If everything works properly, however there is no Caller ID, reduce the load on the OTIU and see if the ID works on one phone at a time.

9 OTIU Rings a short burst and stops
  • Check the version number of the OTIU. If older than rev 4, inquire for updated product.

10 There is no Dial Tone when OTIU is connected to the line
  • Check the wiring. You must connect the LINE coming from the Central Office (CO) to the LINE input of the OTIU. The PHONE jack of the OTIU is the output of the unit, which is connected to the Down-Stream phones.
  • Unplug the power from the OTIU. Is the issue resolved? Replace unit.
  • Use the SAME WIRE that you have plugged into the LINE jack of the OTIU to test the system: Unplug the connected from the wall into the OTIU LINE jack and plug it directly into the phone;
    • Is there no Dial Tone? There is a problem with the Phone Cord.
    • Is there dial tone? Replace OTIU.

11 ## does not cause the OTIU to enter programming mode
  • Check the line and phone connections to the OTIU. Please double check your wiring as the lines can be confusing.

12 *9 Sometimes fails to activate the gate, after I speak with someone at the gate.

  • Some telephones or telephone lines may not work as well with OTIU versions 4 or older. If you have this issue, please contact your dealer to replace your OTIU with a rev# 5 or higher. This problem only appears rarely.
13 After entering *9 to open or close the gate, I get a success tone and then a FAILURE TONE
  • The "Success" tone you hear is the indication that the GAPLM has accepted the command from the OTIU. The "Failure" tone indicates that the GCU (Gate Controller Unit) is not functioning. Check for batteries or power supply to the GCU. Go to the GAPLM and command the gate to open or close from the GAPLM. You will probably notice that the GCU will not accept the command from the GAPLM as well. This indicates that the GCU is not "Responding" to the GAPLM and OTIU commands. The issue is with the GCU.
  • Have you "Trained" the GCU to the GAPLM? If not, you must do so before operating the system. See the GCU Installation Guide.

14 Why is the OTIU so much smaller than other telephone interface units?
  • The main two reasons are:
    • Telephone Ring Transformer in other systems is "Ballast Style". Such transformers are larger due to the fact that the phone ring voltage is 50 HZ. Patent applied for an "Electronic High Voltage Design", which reduces the size of the transformer.
    • The OTIU is built using state-of-the-art technology, which highly reduces the form factor of the device. New robotics are the latest in high speed chip-shooter machinery, which pack the components in a much tighter space.

15 Mounting the OTIU outside in or near the "Demark Box"
  • The OTIU is not water proof. To install outside, mount a PLASTIC housing near the demark location. Mount the OTIU inside the housing, preferably on the inside of the face of the box, so that the antenna of the OTIU is not close to the wall of the residence. This will assure the best range.

16 Using with REPEATERS

  • See #6
17 If there is an ALARM present
  • Install the OTIU AFTER the alarm. Order of connection: Outside Line -> Alarm Box, then output of the Alarm Box -> OTIU Line Input Jack, the the Telephone Jack of the OTIU -> telephones or PBX LINE input.

18 Does the OTIU have a Line Seize Relay?

Where to install the OTIU?

  • Yes it does. There are three relays in this device, one for line seizure, one for placing the 3rd party on hold and one for telephone ring generation.
  • You can place the OTIU at a Demark point, at which time the unit will "seize" the line when the GAPLM is calling. Or, you can plug the OTIU into any telephone jack and connect it to a "Multi-Handset" cordless phone.
19 Does the OTIU need a LIVE LINE?
  • Yes, a live line is required. If you wish to use the OTIU without a live line, order a "Telephone Line Voltage Simulator", PLVS, which is a very low cost transformer, from UWS or your local distributor and plug it into the "LINE JACK" of the OTIU.

20 Can I have more than one OTIU in one residence?

  • Yes. You can have an unlimited number of units per residence.
21 Will the OTIU work with a Multi-Home GAP?
  • Yes. Each residence will need its own OTIU.
  • Or, you can use a Multi-Home OTIU (MHOTIU), which will connect to 63 homes through a dedicated line.

22 Does the OTIU require a dedicated line?
  • No. OTIU will use your standard existing line, or you can even operate it with no line at all (See #19).

23 Do I require any special services, such as Caller ID, Call Waiting or Distinctive Ringing?

  • No. The OTIU generates all of these functions internally. It acts just like a central station, generating its own Distinctive Ringing, Call Waiting, Distinctive Call-Waiting, Caller ID and Call-Waiting-Caller ID, Auto Caller Hold and many more features.
24 Is this system compatible with VOIP ?
  • Yes. Simply attach the OTIU to the output of the VOIP adapter box, then into your telephone base or if you wish to run the whole house from your VOIP system, connect the output of your VOIP box into the LINE jack of the TIU, then the output of the TIU marked PHONE into one of the RJ11 jacks in the home. Make sure that your home is NOT connected to the Central Station when you use this method.
  • If using this method, you will need a Line Voltage Simulator from UWS Part# PLVS, to program the OTIU. When doing so, plug the output of the PLVS into the LINE jack of the OTIU. When finished programming, unplug the PLVS and plug the VOIP box output into the OTIU LINE jack.
