Estimating Quantities for Split Rail Styles - Part 3 || Split Rail Styles
In our example, we are building a 3 Rail Fence. So 3 times 30 equals 90 rails. To calculate the rest of the rails, repeat the process for each side. It pays to make the sides even multiples of 8' to avoid extra work and waste. That is not always possible. In this Split Rail style, the only way to shorten a section is to cut a section out of the rail and then fasten the 2 pieces of rail together using a "Split Rail Connector Insert". The shortest rail you can make with this system is 6'. This size rail would be used for a section that is 5' long, meaning the posts would be 5' apart on center. The extra foot of rail extends past the rails in this style. Either reconfigure your fence to maximize materials or plan on cutting down 6 rails to shorten two sections on the 235' side. This involves more time and materials. Don't be intimidated with cutting the rails down to size. The vinyl is easy to work with but care must be taken when cutting rails to keep the cut perfectly even so when reattached with the connector insert, the cut line will be minimal. Use a miter saw or build a jig to accomplish this. Naturally, planning your project to use even multiples of 8' would make the job a lot easier. For fence lines requiring a smaller section than 5' you would have to shorten more than one section to accomplish this. That's it! You have just figured all your components needed for your project. All that you need now is concrete to fill your post holes with when installing your fence. The rails fasten to the posts with supplied color-matched screws. Don't forget to order gate hardware kits for your gates. Kits include Aluminum gate post inserts, hinges and latch. Drop pin kits are included when ordering double gate hardware kits. All hardware is commercial quality. Not comfortable calculating your own materials? Give us a toll-free call or fax us a drawing and our sales staff would be happy to do the estimate for you.
