White Lightning Electric Safety Coated High Tensile Wire

The Centaur White Lightning Electric Safety Coated High Tensile Wire, manufactured in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, is a horse and live stock friendly fencing solution for pastures and arenas. White Lightning is a permanent electric high tensile wire fence system that can be used stand alone or in combination with other Centaur flexible fence products. White Lightning fencing is designed with animal safety and security in mind. White Lightning electric fencing deters animals from contacting the fence line and is strong enough to contain your horses. The Polymer safety coating helps to prevent slicing and cutting injuries that are often caused by barbed wire and uncoated high tensile wire fencing and is an attractive and inexpensive choice for agricultural and perimeter fencing. White Lightning - Brochure (PDF)

White Lightning Electric strands consist of a 12.5 gauge high tensile steel wire that is embedded in a polymer safety coating that promotes visibility and helps prevent slicing and cutting injuries. Each strand is embedded with three visible black carbon veins for optimum conductivity and 360 degrees of charge. White Lightning is available in white, black (Black Lightning), and brown (Brown Lightning) colors and is sold in 330' or 660' rolls. You may mix and match Centaur fencing configurations for your needs. White Lightning can be installed on its own or combined with rails depending on the look you are trying to achieve. White Lightning Electric wire is installed in a continuous loop and can be attached to T-posts with Sure-Fit T-Post Safety Sleeves or wood posts with Post Insulators. The fence is tightened using tensioners. The continuous loop system is more flexible than rigid individual rails, allowing the White Lightning Wire to slip or move freely to adsorb and dissipate any impacts down the entire length of fence. Basic maintenance for this fence is simple: just re-tension the wire over the years.

The Centaur White Lightning Electric Safety Coated High Tensile Wire is a virtually maintenance-free fence system. White Lightning Wires will retain their beautiful appearance for many years and will not rust, warp, rot, peel, chip, stretch, fade, shatter, or splinter! The Centaur White Lightning Wires are QUV tested by using an accelerated weatherometer that mimics a lifetime of wear in a short time and test results near the 20 year age show the wires in near-perfect condition! This is why Centaur is confident in offering a limited lifetime warranty of 20 years! The Centaur White Lightning Electric Safety Coated High Tensile Wire fence is more economical and a safer alternative than barbed wire or uncoated high tensile wire fence.

Centaur fencing is easy for DIYers to install, but making sure that you have the correct hardware is important. We recommend that you use Page 31 of the Centaur planning guide to layout your project, then contact us for a custom quote. We'll make sure you have just the right amount of hardware to complete your project! Centaur Fencing System - Planning Guide(PDF)

Installation Notes:

The wire strands can be installed on T-posts or round/square wood posts that are set 8'-12' apart. Wire strands span the entire fence line from end to end or end to break in the fence line. For longer stretches, Wire Links are available to splice together the connection between two wire segments.

For high tensile wire fencing, we recommend bracing your terminal sections (gate post, end posts, corner posts) to keep from pulling your posts out of alignment.

FAQ

FAQ
How is Centaur HTP® fencing made?
Centaur proprietary fencing is flexible high tensile polymer material that is a blend of impact modifiers, UV stabilizers, and anti-fungicides. Formulated for strength, durability and appearance under any temperature and climatic conditions, HTP fencing material is color-fast, stain resistant, and mildew resistant. Centaur HTP withstands temperature conditions from -40°F to 200° F without becoming brittle or experiencing any kind of polymer breakdown. Centaur HTP is mechnically bonded to steel wire or wires. Mechanical bonding means that the wire and polymer are joined during manufacture. As the polymer is cooled, it shrinks tightly around the wires. This creates a natural link between the wire and polymer, while allowing each to expand and contract in temperature changes without pulling and degrading the polymer.
Expense?
In general, the initial cost of vinyl fencing is higher than other fence styles. However, when compared on the long run, vinyl fencing remains maintenance-free while other fence styles increase in maintenance and repair costs.
What are the recommended heights for your fence?
We recommend 55" - 56" as the standard post height on level terrain for horse fencing.
What line post spacing and bracing do you recommend for a round pen?

Line post spacing is best determined by the diameter of your pen. With a larger diameter, wider spacing can be used. However, closer line post spacing increases the overall strength of your pen. For bracing, refer to the Instruction Manual provided for details.

Note: All pen posts must be a length of 8′ and concreted during installation.

How much space should I allow between fence line posts?

The range recommended for line post spacing is 8′ to 12′. A layout with closer line post spacing increases the overall strength of your fence.

Lay of the land and animal containment needs can help determine the best post spacing requirements for your project.

Lay of the Land:
For example, a perimeter on level to gentle terrain may use up to a 12′ space between line posts. Irregular terrain may require less distance between posts to better customize the perimeter for your project.

Animal Containment:
The size and temperament of your animals will help determine your needs. For example, an area designed to contain a stallion may require a four rail fence with eight foot post spacing while another for mares may only require three rails with a twelve foot post spacing.

What is the recommended spacing between rails?

Example below based on a Four Rail System on a typical 55″ post height (installed on level terrain):

  • Use a 1″ distance between the top of the rail and the top of the post to allow the top line post bracket to be flush with the top of the post. If you want a little more of your post to show above the fence line, then additional space will be required.
  • Distance between rails 7-1/4″
  • For space between the ground and the bottom of the lowest rail, a clearance of 12″ is recommended.

Please review the Installation Manual for more information.

What kind of post do I use?
We recommend CCA-treated Southern Yellow Pine. These posts are strong and will add to the safety of the fence. For corner/end posts, Centaur recommends 6″ to 8″ x 8′ round wood posts. For line posts, Centaur recommends 4″ to 5″ x 8′ round wood posts. A usual installation might include six 7" x 8' corner and end posts and four 5" x 8' line and brace posts.
Can I install the fence myself?
Yes, we send a detailed installation manual with every shipment, and provide technical assistance over the telephone. Following the installation manual will ensure warranty certification upon completion.
Do you have installers in my area?
We do not have a nationwide network of installers, nor do we have the resources to keep track of their services. We recommend checking the yellow pages for local contractors.
What is my Warranty Coverage?
Centaur® Fencing Systems are built to last. These durable containment systems are backed by either a 20 or 30 year limited warranty, depending on product. See instruction manuals for warranty details.
Should I mount the rail inside or outside of the fence?
It's your choice, as the 3.5" ring shank nails hold the rail tight provided you correctly follow installation instructions and bracing. But before you choose, consider this: placing the rail on the inside of the fence denies horses access to the fence posts, is the strongest method of installation, and is recommended to provide optimal performance. However, rails on the outside of the fence often look better.
How durable are the Flexible 5″ High Tensile Rail Systems?
Each Centaur®, Hot Rail® and CenFlex® 5″ Flexible Rail is embedded with three strands of 12.5 guage high tensile steel wire, providing superior strength and flexibility (up to 4,200lbs of strenth per rail).
Are Flexible 5″ Rail Fence Systems safe for foals?
Yes. However, for small animal containment, Centaur recommends that you install posts at 8′ intervals to allow less gap if contact is made with the fence rail. Closer post spacing will reduce the amount of flex ion the rail system.
Will my horse chew the 5" Rail Fence Systems?
Most horses do not like to chew on Centaur Fencing Systems 5″ Rail because it is not palatable to them. If you are concerned that your animals may chew or crib, then consider using the Hot Rail® Electric 5″ Rail product. A charged fence will also help keep active cribbers away from wood bracing and line posts.
How many tension assembly kits do I need?
A termination assembly is needed to tighten each rail, but only one is needed per 1320' of rail. The fencing can be continuous around corners and up and down hills. Areas less that 100' can be constructed with end post fasteners.
How many Barrel Tensioners do I need for my 5″ Rail System?

A One-Way Barrel Tensioner can maintain up to 660′ of fence on level terrain. A Two-Way Barrel Tensioner can maintain up to 660′ of fence in each direction on level terrain for a combined length of 1,320′.

Each barrel tensioner is capable of tensioning 660′ of straight rail, but you must deduct 100′ from that length for every directional and elevation change.

Which rails/ wires are conductive?
Hot-Rail® and White Lightning® are both conductive.
What number of 5″ rails or safety coated high tensile wires should I install?

Centaur Fencing Systems can be customized to suit your perimeter needs. You may either install three to four Flexible Rails, five Safety Coated Wires, or a combination of Rail and Coated Wire.

See the Centaur Fencing System fence combination information in the Planning Guide for more information.

Which rails are spliceable?
All are with wire links or crimp fittings. Be sure to order the correct ones based on gauge of wire to splice.
