Unless your existing post is flat on the top, you will have to measure the circumference of the post to determine the post diameter. This is not a difficult thing to do. Follow the formula below to determine the diameter of your post. If the post is flat at the top, simply measure across the widest part of the post for the post diameter (Figure 1).

How to Figure Post Diameter (Figure 2):

Step 1 - Measure the circumference of the post (distance around the post).

Step 2 - Take that measurement and divide it by pi (3.14) to determine the post diameter.

Example:

Circumference is About 9.03" (9-1/32"),
Divide the Circumference by 3.14; 9.03 / 3.14 = 2.875",
The Post Diameter is 2-7/8"

Step 3 - Figure your gate frame diameter using the same method.

Tip: To get and accurate measurement of the circumference, you can use a string to wrap around the post and then measure the string. This may be easier than wrapping a tape measure around a post.
