Railing Specific Questions:
First of all, I wanted to make sure you ship out of the state of Ohio. Second, I need some advise on what to order. I have a little mother-in-law cottage behind my house with a small porch running just across the front. It currently has four 4x4 post columns. I want to run a rail (your Kingston style) from the house to the first corner column, turning and going to the second column, then after the second column I'd like it to go about another 18" and have a post; then, duplicate on the other side. My problem is how to attach that short post into the cement and also the question of how to paint it to match the house (off-white).
Yes, we ship anywhere in the continental U.S. On orders over $1750.00 (restrictions may apply), we pay the freight. If you return the shipment, you will not be reimbursed for the actual cost of that freight charge.
Sections come in 6', 8' and 10' widths. If the distance from the house to the column or column to column exceeds the maximum of 10' section, you will have to buy two or more sections and use intermediate posts (line posts). You can cut sections, so the 18" pieces can be easily cut to fit. You could use 1 - 6' wide section for example and cut both 18" pieces from it. Don't assume that every piece of a cut section will work out to a whole section. In other words, if you cut a section to fit a certain distance, you may have to cut the section on both ends to get the picket spacing correct. Most codes require the picket spacing to be no more than 4" apart. This also applies to the spacing between the picket and post when cutting down sections.
The posts can be secured to the concrete with a "post support kit for concrete". These kits consist of a post with a welded flange on the bottom. For more information, see http://www.hooverfence.com/vinyl/railing/kingston-install2.htm
To connect to columns and walls, use flat brackets. This is the same bracket used for flat section mounting. There are two rails on each section, a top and a bottom, so two flat mount brackets are required per hookup to a wall or column.
To figure quantities accurately, a sketch with measurements is required to figure your material list and quote a price.
If you paint the railing, it will void the warranty. The advantage to vinyl railing is never having to paint. The railing comes in white, and clay colors.
Can the Kingston railing systems be installed to form an arch or radius?
Vinyl railing can be installed in an arc or radius by using the angle brackets available in 45 or 22-1/2 degree styles. Typically sections are cut and more line posts are ordered to achieve the desired effect.
What are the component choices available in Kingston railing systems?
The choices of components for the Kingston railing systems are: Picket style - pickets available in 1-1/2" square or baluster style. Baluster style is only available in white. Colors - Kingston railing is available in white or clay colors. Post Caps - Choice of Gothic, New England, Ball Cap, and Flat Cap styles. More information on Kingston components can be found here.
What is the Kingston bracketed system?
The Kingston bracketed system consists of true 4"x4" posts that slide over structural 4x4 wooden posts. Brackets are available in flat, stair, 45 degree, 22-1/2 degree, and column styles. Each bracket consists of an aluminum bracket and vinyl trim cover. The trim cover hides the mounting screws (included) that attach the bracket to the post. Brackets are included with flat and stair sections. Specialty brackets purchased separately. More information on the bracket system can be found here.
Is there an alternative way to mount the Kingston railing without using existing wood posts?
Kingston railing is meant to be installed with the posts fitting over existing structural 4x4 posts. Post support kits can also be used to install the railing. See our post support kit page for more information.
How do I go from a flat section to a stair section?
To go from a flat section to a stair section is only a matter of using the proper brackets. The flat section will install to the transition post with a flat bracket where the stair section will use a stair bracket. The stair bracket will need field cut to the proper angle to match the pitch of the stair section.
General Vinyl Questions:
WHAT IS CERTAINTEED'S PRODUCT MADE OF?
The base ingredient is rigid PVC (polyvinyl chloride) modified to provide superior impact strength and ultraviolet (UV) resistance. The formulation is similar to that of vinyl siding which has a 20-year history of providing long-term durability and structural integrity.
IS IT RECYCLED PLASTIC?
Technically, "recycled" refers to post-consumer or post-industrial materials coming from the waste stream. PVC can and is being recycled. CertainTeed does not use the waste stream as a source. However, we do reprocess our own PVC where it meets our rigid specifications. The use of this reprocessed material keeps it out of the waste stream, positively effecting our environment.
WILL IT TURN YELLOW?
No. CertainTeed products contain 10 parts titanium dioxide (TI02), which prevents ultraviolet degradation. All CertainTeed products are warranted for the lifetime of the original consumer purchaser.
WILL IT BREAK IN COLD/HOT WEATHER?
As with most plastics, vinyl will become less flexible in colder weather conditions. However, unless subjected to unusual impact, it will not break. It is normal for materials to expand and contract during temperature changes. Our product has been engineered to accommodate normal temperature swings and changing climatic conditions.
WHY DON'T YOU MAKE DARK COLORS?
Titanium dioxide is the main ultraviolet inhibitor. It is a white pigment. Therefore, it is difficult to obtain a dark color while having this significant amount of white pigment. Dark colors also absorb heat. There is no current technology that dissipates this heat buildup.
WILL IT BURN?
PVC has a high flash point of 900 degrees F and does not readily ignite. It is therefore categorized as being "self-extinguishing".
DOES IT CHALK?
Light chalking is a normal occurrence of any pigmented surface. Washed away by rainfall and normal changes in weather, this process helps to keep your fence looking like new. In effect, it could be described as virtually "self cleaning".
HOW STRONG IS IT?
PVC can be impact modified. CertainTeed has tailored its formulations to meet or exceed the requirements necessary for excellent performance in the field.
WILL IT HOLD MY ANIMALS? CAN MY KIDS CLIMB ON IT?
WILL MY HORSE CHEW ON IT?
WILL A WEED EATER SCRATCH OR HURT IT?
CertainTeed products have smooth surfaces with no nails, sharp edges or chance for splinters. You, your children, pets and animals are all safer. Vinyl has a tough surface, retains virtually no moisture and has no taste - therefore horses will not "crib" or chew on a CertainTeed fence. In addition, our experience shows that CertainTeed fencing holds up to routine property maintenance, including the use of most types of weed eaters.
HOW DO I KNOW IT WILL LAST OVER 20 YEARS?
CertainTeed's process is similar to that which has been used to produce vinyl siding for nearly 20 years. In addition, CertainTeed performs accelerated weathering tests, which have produced excellent results.
WHAT IS THE WARRANTY AND WHAT DOES IT COVER?
CertainTeed warrants all of its manufactured products (not installation or labor) on a non-prorated basis for the lifetime of the original consumer purchaser. The warranty covers the color of the product as well as any peeling or cracking of the material.
HOW DO I CLEAN IT?
Use of a non-abrasive liquid cleaning agent is normally sufficient. However, for more stubborn stains, a product similar to Soft Scrub may be helpful. Check out the CertainTeed/EverLast warranty page for more information.
CAN I PAINT IT?
There should be no reason to paint your CertainTeed fence. If you decide to paint it, an epoxy-based paint needs to be used in order to adhere to the smooth vinyl surfaces. As with any painted product, it would have to be repainted in time. Any painting of your CertainTeed product voids CertainTeed's lifetime warranty.
CAN I ADD A HOT WIRE ATTACHMENT?
Attachments like a hot wire for post and rail fencing can be attached to your CertainTeed fence.
WHY IS IT MORE EXPENSIVE THAN WOOD?
Very simply, it's not! Although your investment is more initially, this is where your expense ends. The cost difference is quickly eliminated once the substantial cost of continuous maintenance of a wood or metal fence is considered. CertainTeed fencing is the economical way to go, confidently saving you time and money with a fence backed by a lifetime warranty (see Cost Comparison chart below).
Cost includes price of fence averaged over 20 years plus maintenance and repair costs. Cost is expressed as a percentage.
Your CertainTeed fence cost over 20 years is constant because there are no maintenance and repair bills. Wood or metal fences are less expensive in the first few years, but increase and become more costly than your maintenance-free vinyl fence.
