Swing Gate Wheel for Wood Gates

Our SGW-W Swing Gate Wheel for Wood Gates is a strong gate wheel designed to help 'lift' the leading edge (latch side) of a gate. Used commonly to help remedy older sagging gates, it may also be used in construction of new construction gates. Most new construction gates should not need a 'helper' wheel if built properly to prevent sag, however some larger, heavy gates may find value in adding this wheel. Model SGW-W is a 'fixed' gate wheel designed manufactured with heavy steel, welded strong construction, and hot dip galvanized after welding. A swivel swing gate wheel for wood is also available. Steel used in the manufacture of our SGW-W gate wheel is particularly heavier than many gate wheels on the market and preferred by many professional fencers and tradesmen. Gate wheel assembly is hot dip galvanized after weld, protecting entire surface and weld from rust. Hot dip galvanized finishes, which tend to have a 'dull' finish, are preferred over shiny zinc finishes for longevity. This wheel will last for years.

Vertical attachment 'leg' of steel is crafted from a heavy C-channel. C-channel shape and wall thickness is significant and it would take a significant load, or stress to bend this. C-channel width is suitable for nearly any fastener (not included with wheel) and allows head of fastener to naturally be shielded by side walls of C-Channel. We suggest a couple thru-bolts for this gate wheel with larger hot dipped galvanized metal washers on the inside to 'sandwich' the wood material. You may also weld gate wheel in place; consider removing wheel to prevent heat damage. Lag screws may also be used, but expect these to come loose as wood softens in time. Vertical piece is strongly welded to two horizontal pieces which are drilled for a bolt, which serves as an axle. Wheel is strong and tire is solid rubber.

This item does not have a specified load capacity from the manufacturer. It is designed as a 'helper' wheel for many gates found up to 6', even 8' high and say 4-6' wide. The construction and weight of gate will affect performance. Consider also anti-sag gate components such as gate braces, gate replacement/ reinforcement corners, and gate truss/ turnbuckle cable kits, available to help a gate stay 'square' and not sag.

Model SGW-W offers a tremendous value for its price point and we've handled this style of gate wheel for decades with little to no issues. Steel is not thin and will not bend easy. As with any piece of hardware, it is only as strong as its weakest point, and that just might be the way it is fastened.
