Double Straps with Central Eye Hardware Set – Behind Post Installation (8312-E)
Our Double Strap Hinges with Central Eye Hardware Sets come complete with all the hardware required for a behind post mount application. This set provides for heavy duty construction and maximum strength with easy adjustment. Double straps and pins are our best hardware combination for larger field gates, rail gates and entrance gates.
This hardware set includes the 8312 Central Eye Double Strap Hinge, 8250 Adjustable Bottom Gate Fitting, and a Pair of 8317 3/4" Threaded Adjustable Male Hinges with square shaft.
These hinges are typically used for behind post installations and the gate overlaps the post by 1/2" to 1". This installation method is very popular in Europe because the gate is completely out of the opening when the gate is opened fully. The included 8317 male pins feature a square shaft that keeps the pins from rotating once installed.
We offer these kits, in three sizes (12", 18", and 24") and two finishes (Hot Dip Galvanized and BPPCG). The 12" kits are designed for gates up to 4' wide, the 18" kits are designed for gates up to 7' wide, and the 24" kits will work for gate leafs up to 10' wide! The double strap hinge and bottom gate fitting are designed to work with 3" thick gates. Double strap hinges sandwich the wood between the straps which helps to lock your corners at 90° which helps to prevent the gate from sagging. These kits are perfect for use with our Free DIY Wood Gate Plans.

- Ideally used for heavy gates, such as rail gates, driveway entrance gates, dumpster enclosure gates, agricultural gates and the traditional English ‘Five Bar Gate’.
- Double strap hinges sandwich the gate between the straps, virtually locking the corner square at 90 degrees. This helps to prevent the gate from sagging.
- The "E" sets include our 8317 - 13" square shouldered pins which are typically used for installations set behind the posts (overlapping the posts by 1/2" to 1"). This installation method is used extensively throughout Europe as it enables the gate to open 180 degrees. Also, because the gate overlaps the posts it prevents accidental opening when large animals lean against the gates.
Gate Installation Configurations
Hung Behind the Posts
If the gate is hung behind the posts the gate is constructed so it is at least 1" wider than the opening between the posts. Square posts are recommended. Pins with square shaft (#8317) should be used to prevent pin rotation along with the Adjustable Bottom Fitting (#8250), which allows for easy adjustment of the gate height at the latch end. There are several advantages which include:
- Allow for 1/8" to 1/4" of space between the gate and the post.
- The gate opens a full 180 degrees so it is completely out of the way when open. This reduces the chances of injury to animals and catching the gate with equipment when driving through the opening.
- When dealing with livestock, such as horses there is tendency to push on gates rather than pull them back into the field which reduces the risk of animals escaping. In the UK this tends to be the norm.

After an initial issue with my original order due to the delivery method. I found some beautiful hinges and a nice gate plan on their site. That I went with instead. The hinges are superior quality to anything you'll find at home Depot or a place like that. I look forward to eventually ordering a few more sets.i got the cottage 18 in strap hinge set.
