Carriage Bolts (FP-CB)

We offer a selection of multipurpose Carriage Bolts (sold in packages of 2) that correspond with our pairs of 6295, 8295, and 8292 hinges, as well as the 8256 Mounting Plates. These bolts are not included with the hinge pairs or Mounting Plates because the length of bolt needed will vary with each installation.

Carriage Bolts (FP-CB) Features:

Both 3/8" dia. and 1/2" dia. carriage bolts available.
Each package will contain two bolts with nuts and washers.
Manufactured from steel.
Available in Hot Dipped Galvanized, Black (BPPCG), or Stainless Steel finishes.

Ordering Notes:

Carriage bolts need to be 1" greater than the thickness of your gate/door, or the length of the post, that you will be through-bolting the hardware. If you are also installing the optional Back Plates or Hinge Fronts, then your carriage bolt length will need to be 1-1/2" greater than the thickness of the gate/door or length of the post.

Sizing Notes:

Use the 3/8" carriage bolts for 7"-16" Old-Fashioned Heavy Duty Hinges (8292 Series), Cranked Bands with Pins (8295 Series), or the Mounting Plates with Adjustable Pin (8256 Series).

Use the 1/2" carriage bolts for 18"-36" Old-Fashioned Heavy Duty Hinges (8292 Series), Cranked Bands with Pins (8295 Series), or Contemporary Cranked Bands with Pins (6295 Series).

Special Ordering Notes:

We recommend ordering the stainless steel carriage bolts if you are purchasing our Contemporary Cranked Bands with Pins (6295 Series). If your Contemporary Hinges are black, then you can use the Snug Cottage Hardware Touch-Up paint on the stainless steel carriage bolt head, resulting in a smooth finish that will match your hinge. The Black Polyester Powder Coat over Galvanize (BPPCG) finish will have a texture that may not match the smooth finish of the Contemporary hinges.

Instructions

It is best to drill through the post half-way, from both sides, to ensure perfect alignment. It is hard to drill straight through a 6" sq. post, so we recommend marking the position on both sides of the post and drilling only half-way through from each side. The hole from the second side will find the first, making the installation clean and tidy.
Touch-up paint may be required for the bolt heads..

We bought the heavy stainless black powder coated hinges for the set of Japanese Garden Fences and Gates Im building in fine Japanese Woodworking style, with a Shou Sugi Ban finish on prime Western Red Cedar. As you can imagine, not just any hinge (or latch for that matter) would do. Im a product designer and a Master Craftsman and Im damn picky. These hinges had the clean quiet aesthetic I needed and the quality I demand. They arrived ahead of schedule and are going to be perfect. I appreciate the option to mount them pins-up or opposing to allow or prevent easy removal of the gate. Nice for future service and maintenance. The black carriage bolts and screws are appreciated too.
